
The rhythmic beats of bamboo drums and the vibrant energy of Iloilo’s cultural traditions triumphed at Thursday’s Parada ng Kalayaan (Independence Parade) in Manila, with the province securing two top spots in the Festival Performance Competition.
The Tultugan Festival of Maasin, Iloilo, co-presented by the Municipal Government of Maasin and the Iloilo Provincial Government, claimed the Champion title, dazzling judges with its dynamic portrayal of the town’s bamboo-centric heritage. Dancers in intricate, nature-inspired costumes moved to the hypnotic cadence of tultugan (bamboo drums), symbolizing unity and resilience in agrarian communities.

Iloilo City’s iconic Dinagyang Festival, a crowd favorite known for its warrior dances and Ati tribe tributes, landed 1st Runner Up. The performance, a collaboration between the Iloilo City Government and the Iloilo Festival Foundation, Inc., featured elaborate headdresses and synchronized choreography that paid homage to Panay Island’s pre-colonial roots.
Antipolo City’s Maytime Festival, performed by San Jose National High School, rounded out the top three as 3rd Runner Up.
Organized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), the competition drew over 30 entries nationwide. Judges evaluated performances based on cultural authenticity, creativity, and audience impact.
