BAROTAC VIEJO, ILOILO — Thousands of devotees and tourists flocked to the municipality of Barotac Viejo as it marked the 50th year of the iconic Taltal, one of the most enduring and meaningful Lenten traditions in Western Visayas.

Held every Good Friday, the Taltal is a live reenactment of the life, suffering, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This year’s golden milestone drew large crowds, reaffirming its place as a significant religious and cultural event not only in Iloilo but across the region.

Participants, composed mostly of local residents, performed scenes from the Last Supper to the crucifixion at Calvary. The production, deeply rooted in community participation, featured volunteers from different walks of life—bringing authenticity and devotion to the portrayal.

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF TALTAL
The Taltal tradition in Barotac Viejo began in 1975, born from a religious vow and a deep desire of the community to express their faith through storytelling and performance.

Since then, it has evolved into an annual Holy Week highlight, performed consistently for decades and becoming a defining identity of the town. Unlike commercial productions, Taltal remains a community-driven performance, with no professional actors—only locals dedicating their time and effort.

The word “Taltal” itself is associated with the reenactment of Christ’s suffering, making it a solemn yet powerful expression of faith. It is staged not merely as entertainment but as a form of devotion and reflection.

More than a performance, Taltal is considered one of the longest-standing religious traditions in Iloilo, symbolizing the enduring spirituality of the people of Barotac Viejo.

At its core, the Taltal is more than a reenactment—it is a living testimony of faith passed down through generations.
In a fast-changing world, traditions like this remind us of the importance of community, belief, and identity. The 50th Taltal is not just a celebration of longevity, but a powerful message: that faith, when shared and lived, becomes stronger over time.
