“I JOINED THIS PAGEANT BECAUSE I HAVE THE COURAGE TO SPEAK UP TO THE SOCIAL INJUSTICES HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY…”: TAJANLANGIT’S POWERFUL Q&A RESPONSE EARNS HER HIYAS SANG KATAGMAN 2026 CROWN

OTON, ILOILO — A defining and timely moment of Hiyas sang Katagman 2026 unfolded during the question-and-answer portion, where Candidate No. 8 Maria Erin Tajanlangit delivered a bold response that ultimately secured her victory.
“I joined this pageant because I have the courage to speak up to the social injustices happening in our country…” Tajanlangit said, immediately capturing attention as she reframed the role of pageantry amid pressing social and economic challenges.
Her answer emphasized the need for sustainable solutions to recurring national issues, pointing to long-term policy approaches and reforms in addressing economic strain. She highlighted contingency planning and raised concerns on fuel-related policies, including oil deregulation and the burden of excise tax and value-added tax on oil.
Delivered in a timely context of national socio-economic discussions, her response resonated strongly as she connected her message to the struggles of everyday workers and farmers affected by rising costs and economic pressure.
She also underscored the importance of awareness and collective action in addressing systemic social injustices, positioning her platform as a voice for public concern rather than personal gain.
In her closing statement, Tajanlangit dedicated her message and crown to workers and farmers, saying:
“Gani, subong nga adlaw sang mamumugon, gina halad ko ini nga korona bilang isa ka baskong nga panindugan, bilang isa ka tingong nga nagakilala sa dungog kag panawagan sang aton mamumugon kag mga mangunguma. Madamo gid nga salamat.”
Her response drew strong audience reaction and quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the competition night, reinforcing the growing relevance of advocacy-driven voices in modern pageantry.
Tajanlangit was later crowned Hiyas sang Katagman 2026, with her Q&A answer widely regarded as the defining factor in her win.

Full Context of the Question and Answer
Question:
In times of global crisis and economic austerity, what is the relevance of pageants like Hiyas sang Katagman today?
Answer (Tajanlangit response):
To be honest, I was really hesitant when joining this competition because of the ongoing crisis. I even asked my sister, “Ka worth-it pa ba mag intra sa pageant knowing that there are people struggling and I’ll be spending thousands for this pageant?” But she said, “Ara gihapon ang crisis? Bisan ma intra ko sa pageant or hindi.”
So I promised myself to make something meaningful out of this.
I joined this pageant not because I have the beauty or the body or the height, but I have the courage to speak up to the social injustices happening in our country.
So I am calling out to address these issues. We should have sustainable solutions, like a contingency plan, like abolishing oil deregulation law, removing the excise tax and value-added tax on fuels and products, in doing this call through mobilization, or even just posting on social media to keep people informed.
