Santa Barbara, Iloilo Secures 1st Runner Up in National Independence Day Float Competition 2025

MANILA, Philippines — The Provincial Government of Iloilo’s historical float, Cry of Santa Barbara, earned 1st Runner Up honors at the Parada ng Kalayaan (Independence Parade) on 12 June 2025. The event, organized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), featured entries from cities and provinces nationwide celebrating pivotal moments in the country’s fight for freedom.

Santa Barbara’s float commemorated the 1898 uprising in Iloilo, where General Martín Delgado led revolutionary forces against Spanish colonial rule. The design incorporated traditional materials such as bamboo, abaca fiber, and dried sugarcane leaves, alongside symbolic elements like a replica of the Santa Barbara Catholic Church and historical flags. Judges cited its adherence to historical themes and meticulous craftsmanship as key factors in its placement.

Candon City, Ilocos Sur, claimed the Champion title with Ikkis ti Candon, a float depicting the 1901 “Cry of Candon” resistance against American forces. Bago City, Negros Occidental, placed 2nd Runner Up with Cinco de Noviembre Revolt, highlighting the 1898 Negros Revolution.

The NHCP stated that entries were judged based on historical accuracy, creativity, and technical execution. Awarding ceremonies for winners, including trophies and cash prizes, are scheduled for late June 2025.

The Parada ng Kalayaan is part of the NHCP’s annual Kalayaan campaign, which aims to promote public engagement with Philippine history through interactive and artistic displays.
