Yobab Apologizes for Coffee Critique, Clarifies Intent Amid Iloilo City Persona Non Grata Debate

ILOILO CITY — Social media personality Yobab has publicly addressed the backlash over her critical remarks about a local coffeeshop, clarifying that her comments were not intended to harm the business or its staff. The controversy arose after a TikTok video of her review went viral, prompting PJ Arañador, a consultant for the Iloilo UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy on Culture and Design, to propose declaring her persona non grata in the city.

Yobab’s Statement
In a follow-up video posted June 7, 2025, Yobab apologized for the unintended consequences of her critique, emphasizing that she never sought to disparage the barista or call for the establishment’s closure. “I acknowledge that I should have elaborated on my feedback. My intention was not to hurt anyone,” she said. “It was an honest opinion—hindi talaga ako nasasarapan [I genuinely didn’t enjoy it]—but I realize now how my words could be misinterpreted.”

She stressed her support for local businesses and expressed regret that her remarks sparked division. “Iloilo has given me so much warmth. My critique came from a place of wanting improvement, not malice,” she added.

UNESCO Consultant’s Proposal
The apology follows a formal recommendation by PJ Arañador, a cultural and design consultant for Iloilo’s UNESCO Creative City initiative, to declare Yobab unwelcome in the city. Arañador argued that her remarks, even if unintentional, risked undermining local entrepreneurs and the city’s gastronomic reputation. The proposal, now under review by the Iloilo City Council, has ignited debates about balancing free expression with community respect.

Public Reaction
While some netizens welcomed Yobab’s apology, others remain divided. Supporters argue her critique reflects valid consumer feedback, while critics insist public figures should exercise greater responsibility. The coffeeshop at the center of the controversy has not released a statement but reportedly saw increased patronage following the viral posts.

As tensions ease, the situation highlights the challenges of navigating criticism in the digital age—where personal opinions can quickly escalate into public disputes. The council is expected to decide on the persona non grata proposal in the coming weeks.
