What’s Next for Iloilo International Airport?

In an exciting shift for travel enthusiasts, Iloilo International Airport has recently welcomed a wave of international routes, sparking enthusiasm among locals and tourists. Cebu Pacific revived the Iloilo to Hong Kong route in October 2024, marking the beginning of this upward trend. Shortly after, the airline added direct flights to Singapore in November 2024 and introduced a much-anticipated Bangkok route on March 31, 2025. These additions further connect Iloilo’s growing role as a hub for global travel.

Adding to the momentum, Scoot, a Singapore-based carrier, began its Singapore-Iloilo service on April 14, 2025. While details remain under wraps, industry watchers note this move could strengthen the economic and tourism industry in both countries, mainly benefiting Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Meanwhile, whispers of upcoming routes continue to circulate. A proposed Iloilo-Vietnam link is currently pending approval, while hopes are high for announcements involving Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan in the coming months.

Infrastructure Overhaul & Future Plans

Iloilo International Airport is undergoing a major PHP 190 million upgrade led by the DOTr and CAAP. Most of the funds (PHP 132.9 million) focus on terminal improvements: fixing the roof, installing efficient air-conditioning and LED lighting, plus adding escalators, new boarding bridges, and seating to handle crowds better. An extra PHP 37.55 million provides three powerful chillers for peak seasons. These upgrades will significantly increase capacity – domestic by 84% (to 675 passengers) and international by 13% (to 407 passengers) – matching Panay Island’s rising travel and business needs.

Looking forward, CAAP plans PHP 141 million for more terminal work in 2025, plus PHP 550 million to repave runways and PHP 49.98 million for airfield improvements. CAAP Director General Raul Del Rosario stated these projects ensure global standards and support the region’s economy, signaling strong confidence in Iloilo as Western Visayas’ key gateway.

The surge in new flights is boosting confidence among local businesses and tourism groups. Restaurants, hotels, and transport services near the airport are already seeing more customers, pointing to wider economic benefits. Travel agencies also report a jump in inquiries, especially from overseas workers and families excited about easier travel to the Visayas.

Right now, the focus is firmly on what’s next. Every new flight route and airport improvement strengthens Iloilo’s role—not just as the front door to the Philippines’ top destinations, but as an emerging hub in Southeast Asia’s travel network. As one frequent traveler said, “The sky’s no longer the limit—it’s just the start.”
