Igtuble (Tubungan, Iloilo) to Aningalan (San Remigio, Antique): Ultimate Road Trip Guide

Tubungan town’s highland barangay of Igtuble and Igpaho is a hidden paradise known for its panoramic mountain views and cool climate. Anew “mountain pass” road now connects Igtuble (in Tubungan, Iloilo) directly to Aningalan in San Remigio, Antique. This winding route (roughly 10–12 km) cuts through dense forest and pine groves, dramatically shortening the ride between Iloilo and Antique. Riders can expect a mix of paved and gravel sections as of mid-2025, but the scenery more than makes up for it.

Route & Overview

The road begins at Brgy. Igtuble (Tubungan) and climbs over a high ridge, descending into Aningalan – often called Antique’s “Little Baguio” for its pine-laden hills. As of July 2025 less than one kilometer on the Iloilo side remained unpaved, but construction is underway. In practice, the route is drivable on a motorcycle year-round (dry season being easiest). From the view deck in Barangay Igpaho you overlook central Iloilo and even glimpses of Negros Island, then descend into misty Antique highlands via some parts of Igbaras mountains. The trip from Igtuble to Aningalan takes only about 20–30 minutes (longer by car), and cuts travel time to San Remigio by roughly half.

Distance & Time: ~10–12 km of winding mountain road. Allow 30–45 minutes by motorcycle (the extra gravel slows cars more).

Elevation: Aningalan sits at ~970 m, Igpaho at ~850 m. The climb is steep and twisty.

Road Surface: Mostly concreted, with a short gravel stretch on the Iloilo side. The Antique side (San Remigio–Aningalan) is largely concrete, though some sections are under repair. However, significant road damage and cracks have been observed along the Igtuble to Igpaho route, making it nearly impassable for small vehicles.

Road Conditions (July 2025 Update)

As of summer 2025 the new road is open but still a work-in-progress. DPWH crews have paved most of the route, but riders should be ready for a brief rough section (loose gravel and earth) on the Iloilo approach. The Antique approach (from San Remigio town proper) has also seen major rehabilitation, including new culverts and a bridge. Local officials note that these upgrades will halve the travel time to Aningalan from Iloilo. Always check recent local news or social media for advisories: heavy rains can trigger mudslides on mountain roads, and fallen debris occasionally blocks passages after storms. But in dry weather the highway is generally passable by motorbike or sturdy SUV.

Current Status: Mostly paved; less than one kilometer of Iloilo side road being finished. DPWH Iloilo District is handling the remaining paving.

Construction Zones: Some rough detours and loose surfaces remain. Ride cautiously on gravel (especially downhill).

Seasonal Caution: During rainy months expect slick patches, potholes, and occasional rockfalls. The road is best in late dry season (Feb–May).

Highlights & Scenic Stops

This is a road trip for scenery lovers. Early morning rides reward you with mist-filled valleys and sunrise-tinted peaks. The winding road snakes through a verdant highland forest, climbing past pine groves that lend Igtuble a “Little Baguio” feel. Along the way you’ll see dramatic overlook points – one famous view from Igtuble’s public deck looks down on miles of hills stretching to Iloilo’s lowlands and even to Negros Island.

Aningalan itself is a cool, green retreat known for outdoor fun. Near the road are:

Highland Strawberry Garden: A strawberry farm where you can pick fruit and buy jams or pastries. The garden is set against rolling fields and pine trees.

Danao Lake: A small mountain lake reachable by a short hike uphill. Surrounded by forest, it’s ideal for picnic snacks or a rest by the water.

Rafflesia Site: In season (late rainy season), local guides will take you on a trek to see the giant Rafflesia bloom (Antique has its own Rafflesia species).

Igbaclag Cave and Forest Trails: Rough trails lead through mossy jungle to hidden caves just outside Aningalan (hire a guide for safety). Kindly check with local guides, as Igbaclag Cave was temporarily closed to the public for rehabilitation.

Near the trailheads and in Aningalan village you’ll find local eateries and homestays. Banglid Dos and Aningalan Lodge are two resorts serving hot meals (don’t miss native-style coffee and mountain vegetables). Bring some peso bills to buy strawberries or souvenirs from village stalls along the highway.

Activities for Riders and Travelers

Motorcyclists will especially enjoy the twisty mountain road – sharp switchbacks and rolling grades make for a fun ride (just obey speed limits and watch for gravel). At Tubungan view deck you can park and hike up Mount Tambara (the mountain behind the village) to catch 360° views of Panay Island.

In Aningalan:

Hiking & Camping: The pine-forested slopes are perfect for an overnight camp. A clearing near the Strawberry Garden allows camping with lantern and sky views (cool night temperatures, so bring layers).

ATV/Bike Trails: Local guides rent motorbikes and ATVs for off-road trails to hidden waterfalls and ridge-top vistas.

Photography: Both ends of the road are photogenic. Sunset over the highlands or sunrise mist in the valley are Instagram-worthy scenes.

Community Visits: Meet villagers in Igtuble and Aningalan to sample fresh upland produce (strawberries, sweet potatoes, tamarind juice). Support local artisans and farmers.

As Ilonggo riders, we love how this new link opens up classic “ride-to” loop circuits. For example, you could loop back to Iloilo via Igbaras town or connect onward toward Antique’s coast via Hamtic. (Check road maps ahead – some rural stretches remain unpaved.)

Tips for a Safe, Fun Ride

Vehicle Prep: Fill up on fuel in Tubungan or San Remigio; there are no gas stations on the mountain. A motorcycle with good suspension or a 4×4 is best.

Gear Up: Temperatures can drop below 15°C at night. Wear layers and warm gear. Riding gloves and full-face helmet are a must on dusty sections.

Check Weather: Choose a clear day. Rain makes the gravel slippery and can roll small stones onto the road. Muddy roads may be impassable after a storm.

Navigation: GPS maps may not show the newest road clearly. Download offline maps or ask locals for directions (“go to Igtuble Poblacion and take the new road to Aningalan”). Signage is minimal.

Emergency Items: Pack water, snacks, and a basic repair kit. Cell service is spotty – tell someone your route plan.

Respect Locals: This is a quiet rural area. Keep noise down near villages and pack out any trash. Ask permission before photographing people.

Safety note: If you hit the rough patch (unpaved Iloilo side), ride slowly over loose gravel. The Antique end is much smoother concrete. Watch for sudden sharp bends, and stay on your side of the lane around blind corners.
