Thousands of residents flocked to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol on Friday night as provincial officials officially opened the “Candyland Christmas” lights and capped the ceremony with a fireworks display, signaling the start of the province’s holiday season.

Organizers said the light installations — featuring candy-themed lanterns, arches and a towering illuminated Christmas tree — will remain on nightly as part of the Candyland Christmas Bazaar and food festival that accompanies the display. The bazaar and food stalls showcase local products and culinary favorites, offering families a place to shop and dine under the lights.

Provincial officials confirmed that the event drew sizable crowds from across the province and neighboring areas, prompting heightened security and crowd-control measures in and around the Capitol grounds. Authorities advised motorists to expect heavy traffic and recommended the use of public transportation for those planning to attend weekend festivities.

Officials: lights meant to be family-oriented and boost local tourism

Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. described the Capitol display as a family-friendly attraction intended to bring communities together and boost local tourism during the holiday season. Provincial announcements and promotional materials emphasized the event’s role in supporting small vendors and promoting Iloilo as a holiday destination.

The provincial government has allocated ₱3.5 million for this year’s holiday decorations and programming. Local reports earlier in the week confirmed that the budget will cover the installation of Christmas displays, the operation of the Capitol bazaar, and other related activities.

Fireworks, lantern parade and nightly programs

The evening’s program included a lantern parade and culminated in a fireworks show timed to delight families and children. Organizers plan to stage additional fireworks on key weekends during the festival run, alongside nightly performances and special activities for visitors. Live streams and social posts from the scene captured families taking photos and enjoying the festive atmosphere.
